As you know we went on a little family holiday last week down to Mandurah which is only an hours drive to get to with the new freeway extension. We went last year as well with Husband's Mum and Dad and my brother in law.Holidays with kids is like.... Well. Let me say this. There is NO SUCH THING AS A HOLIDAY WITH KIDS. It should be called Moving-the kids-from-the-relative-comfort-and-serenity-of-your-own-home-and-moving-them-to-another-destination-and-taking-everything-in-your-house-with-you.
In fact, we were only gone 5 nights but still the car was loaded up like you'd think we were headed to the Antarctic for 500 years. So much so, my husband cursed most of the way there because he couldn't see out of the back window because there was so much cargo shoved in there.
After much deliberation we decided to bring the double pram to lug the kids around in. We couldn't improvise without it. We had to bring the portacot for Mr 1 to sleep in because THERE IS NO IMPROVISATION WITHOUT THAT (he ain't sleeping with us). And then there are the toys. Which we need so they can amuse themselves for a bit. God help us. And with all the clothes, nappies and all my husbands PROTEIN we had to think long and hard about bringing Miss 3 with us. Because lets face it. That is valuable luggage real estate she is using up by being in the car.
So when you get all your STUFF out of the car you need to take a long nap just to recover from the exhaustion. But no. Kids want to play. They want to go in the pool. So then we run around trying to locate everything for the next activity and I rant and rave because I can't find a bloody thing.
And this is when I think longingly about our lives before the kids graced us with their presence. Sure we had taken a lot of holidays, touristy ones to Europe, Japan etc but we only had one relaxing holiday at our honeymoon on Hamilton Island. We had a good 3 years between marriage and Miss 3 arriving and we should have enjoyed more relaxing holidays because life was going to get a bit more chaotic with kids in the mix. And then I think to myself, what the hec did we used to do without the kids. How did we fill our days? What they hell were we doing. Jack shit is what we were doing. Being lazy. That's what. Going out with friends. Meeting at the pub for a drink. Sleeping in. GOING SHOPPING. Ahhh. The good old days.
We should have enjoyed more leisurely holidays before the kids arrived because holidays just aren't very relaxing anymore.
So we manage to get all the stuff back into the car to come back home. It was a bit like playing Tetris with all the items and getting them to fit snuggly into the car.
We did have a great time. But. aahhhhh. It sure is great to be home.
Oh, that sounds exhausting!
ReplyDeleteAh, good old Mandurah. Used to go there on weekends away quite often. Pre-kids, that is. Was a lot more relaxing holidaying back then!
ReplyDeleteYour holidays sound just like mine!!
ReplyDeleteBut it gets better...we no longer need the portacot...YES! :)
Great read, I remember those days. It seriously does get better.
ReplyDeleteOur last trip away, I took 2 books with me (for 4 days away) - just a normal thing for holidays in a previous life. This time, with a toddler running around wanting to touch the campfire, jump into the river, run away to other people's campsites and NOT SLEEP, I read a whole 2 pages. Hopefully it will get easier as she gets older? Please tell me it gets easier!!
